Harris plans to join Memphis in shelter-in-place order

AJC locations will still offer phone appointments for those who call in at 901-504-6580.“These centers can see high volumes of job-seekers in relatively small spaces. As a result, we agree with the state that we should temporarily shutter these locations to prevent spread and support social distance," said Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. DeSoto County COVID-19 cases rise to 23The Mississippi State Department of Health announced that COVID-19 cases have increased by 42 to 249 Monday morning. There are currently 23 cases reported in DeSoto County, the second highest county total in the state behind Hinds County’s 24 cases.Three counties in the state reported their first cases of COVID-19 in the state.
MATA adds temporary travel limitations for MATAplus customers
The Memphis Area Transit Authority plans to only transport MATAplus paratransit customers to work, medical-related destinations and to purchase or collect food from grocery stores, restaurants or food distribution centers at non-profit organizations.These temporary limitations go into effect Tuesday and are an expansion of the new guidelines MATA is implementing in response to the spread of COVID-19. It is also an expansion of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris' emergency orders.Other temporary measures implemented by MATA as of Saturday include:
Customers are encouraged to use every other seat on a fixed-route bus and Trolley car. Caution tape will be used to help passengers maintain distance from one another.
No more than two passengers will be allowed to ride on any MATAplus paratransit vehicle (includes care attendant and/or escort).
Customer lobby areas and public restrooms at each Transit Center will be closed to the public.
Customer service counters are open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday at each Transit Center.
Security officers will only allow three people to enter and exit the building at a time to perform customer service transations.The Assessment Center is closed to the public.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland issues 'safer at home' executive order

COVID-19 reported case county reaches 84 in Shelby County
A Monday update from the Shelby County Health Department has pushed the reported COVID-19 reported case county from 66 on Sunday to 84.Fourty-six Shelby County residents have been approved for testing, and 103 residents are being monitored by public health. Despite the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), Memphians are still willing to help each other as well as local businesses. The Tigers football team is no exception.Tigers coach Ryan Silverfield, along with his coaching staff, purchased 360 meals for the Mid-South Food Bank. The pledge came on Sunday after Silverfield was challenged on Twitter by University of Memphis dean of students Justin Lawhead.
